EMDR therapy
What is EMDR?
EMDR is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that targets painful memories, thoughts, feelings and somatic sensations to reprocess them in a more adaptive way so new and healthier associations can be formed.
After EMDR, material that was overwhelming becomes less intense while a more adaptive and positive sense of self emerges. Clients report that the painful memories become distant, with new meaning. EMDR promotes natural change towards a greater, positive sense of self-awareness.
How does it work?
EMDR therapists guide clients on specific procedural steps incorporating a mind-body approach through alternating/bilateral eye movement, sound, or tactile stimulation (tapping).
This treatment approach supports the brain to resume healthy processing of information which results in the alleviation of presenting symptoms, a decrease in distress, improved view of self, relief from bodily disturbance, and resolution of present and future anticipated triggers.
